Everyday is a great day to read, but during these cold, dreary months, there is nothing better than curling up with a good book and reading with your child!
Here are some tips for reading at home with your children:
- Keep books in sight and handy as much as possible!
- Explore different authors, series and genres. Some kids prefer non-fiction while others prefer fiction. When your child shows interest in a particular book, try to find other books written by the same author or books of the same genre or topic.
- Read TO your child (even if he or she is already a fluent reader!).
- Read WITH your child. Take turns reading chapters, pages, sentences, or words.
- TALK about the book
- I wonder why....
- This character/ setting/ story reminds me of ______ because...…..
- This book is similar to/ different than _______
- I wonder what will happen next....
- My favorite part was when........
- What if.......
- Finally, ENJOY the time spent together bonding over a good book!
Happy Reading!
